George W. Powell III

George Wesley Powell III, Lee's Summit, died January 25, 2014 at the Villages of Jackson Creek in Independence, MO. He was 91. He was born March 5, 1922 in Holmes, Pennsylvania to George W. & Anna (Talbot) Powell.

He served in Italy during WWII with the US Army. In 1950 he began a career with E.I Dupont in Philadelphia, PA and in 1968 was transferred to open the new plant in Moberly, MO. He retired in 1983. George was a 50 years member of the Masonic Lodge #573 in Prospect Park, PA. Past Commander of the American Legion Post #6 Moberly, MO. Chairman of the Board Community Memorial Hospital Moberly MO. A lifetime member of the VFW. Grand Chef de Gare and Commander of the 40/8 Society of Missouri. Past President and Secretary treasurer Lee's Summit Kiwanis Club. Past President of The Shepherds Center Lee's Summit. He was a 32 degree Mason of the Scottish Rite and a member of the Ararat Shrine Temple Kansas City MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Olive Cianci Powell; a brother, Henry Talbot Powell; a sister, Dorothy Tull & his second wife, Eva Markley. He is survived by four children, Penny Fowler (Wayne) of Piscataway, NJ, George W. Powell IV of Clearwater FL, Mario Powell (Brenda) of Blue Springs, MO & Holly Vestal (Danny) of Columbia, MO; 10 grandchildren & 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan 30, 2014 at 11am at Lee's Summit Christian Church, 800 NE Tudor Rd. Lee's Summit, MO. Friends may call from 10-11am at the church that morning. Graveside services will be Friday, Jan 31, 2014 at 1pm at Oakland Cemetery in Moberly, MO with full military honors.
