George C. Kopp, Jr., passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2012. A visitation will be held on Friday, February 3rd, from 3:30 p.m., to 5:00 p.m., at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 11822 Holmes, Kansas City, MO, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 5:00 p.m.
George was born in Kansas City, Missouri on September 10, 1921 to George C. Kopp and Antoinette Collins Kopp. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Koehler Kopp; his son, Danny; two brothers, John and James; one sister, Genevieve and an infant great-grandson, Ryan. He is survived by one sister, Mary Sayers (Ed); six sons, George (Janice), Terry (Rita), Jim (Megan), Bob (Heidi), Mike (Beth), and Bill; four daughters, Barbara Atkinson (Kimber), Janice Clune (Pete), Kathleen Grasser (Jim), and Betty Ann Bugler (Chris). He is also survived by 29 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.
George graduated in 1942 from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in business administration. George’s career path and personal life took on new meaning when he was ordained a permanent deacon in 1973. Other than his family, this was his greatest achievement. He served at Visitation Parish where he enjoyed the love and the respect of the clergy and his fellow parishioners. He retired in 1989. He will be greatly missed but remembered by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City or Kansas City Hospice House.
