Erskine Wall James died on February 28, 2019 in St. Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born August 31, 1941 in Gainesville, Georgia of Tampa residents James Edgar Wall, Jr., and Georgia Wall. She attended public schools and is a 1959 graduate of Plant High School in Tampa. As a youth, she attended, as a camper and counselor, Skyland Camp in North Carolina where she created many fond memories. She attended the University of Georgia and earned an A.B.J. in 1963. While at UGA, she was a proud member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and was active in student life. At UGA, she met her husband Frank Anthony James and they wed on July 13, 1963.
She was a public high school teacher for most of her life, starting in journalism and moving to Language Arts and ending her career teaching English to speakers of other languages. She and her husband lived in Athens, Georgia then moved to Sherman, Texas, then moved to Macon, Georgia before moving to LaGrange, Georgia, where they spent many years. After her retirement, she spent an enjoyable five years in Springfield, Missouri where her husband taught at Missouri State. In 1994, she and her husband bought a small cottage, which she loved, in the mountains of Highlands, North Carolina. While raising her two sons, she was an active volunteer in the Junior League, the Methodist Church, and the United Way. She loved travel, gardening, the beach, and being outdoors.
She loved events – both sporting and social. She was active in her support of progressive causes and the Democratic Party. She raised two sons Erskine Anthony James (married to Candi) and George Edgar “Eddie” James (married to Tammy). She is survived by her husband, her two sons and their wives, and seven grandchildren: Whit, Harper, Annie, JB, Charlie, Elizabeth, and Oliver. She was predeceased by her parents and her beloved brothers James Edgar “Eddie” Wall, III and John Dixon Wall. The last years of her life, she and her husband kept residences in both Georgia, where her son Erskine and his family lived, and Kansas City, where Eddie and his family lived. In the last year of her life, she suffered from dementia, and this dementia was a factor in her passing.
There will be a memorial service celebrating her life in the Chapel of LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia, on March 30, 2019 at 3:00 pm. Inurnment of her remains in Tampa, Florida at a later date.
