Born December 4th, 1927, in Hallsville, Missouri, to parents Glenn D. and Gladys Marie Welch, she was the second of 5 siblings. Emma Lou grew up on a farm in Hallsville, graduating from Hallsville High School in 1945, then moving to Kansas City in 1950, where she lived the rest of her life.
Emma Lou Owen married her soulmate, Claude T. Owen, on March 23, 1947, in Columbia, Missouri. They enjoyed 62 years of wedded bliss, until Claude’s death in 2010.
Emma Lou was a devoted housewife, well known for her excellent cooking skills. She enjoyed her family, friends and prayer group. She was a long-time member of the Broadway Baptist Church, supporting many church projects and committees, and highlighted by faithfully attending and serving at the Christmas morning Julotta celebration for over 50 years. She loved to play chicken foot, and somehow would find a way to win, more times than not. She was an avid collector of Old Ivory Porcelain, having, at last count, 17 china cabinets for their display. She thoroughly enjoyed being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Emma Lou Owen is survived by her brother Al Welch, daughter Linda (and Shane) Christensen; grandchildren Aimee Smith, Emilie Edwards, Erik Christensen, Matthew Christensen, Joel Owen Christensen, Zachary Owen, Tess (Owen) Ziegler, Garrett Christensen, Jon Claude Christensen, and Nolan Christensen; she is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren. Emma Lou was preceded in death by her beloved husband Claude T. Owen, her son Philip Owen, brother Glenn Wayne Welch, sisters Joyce Millikan and Fern Miller.
Graveside services will occur at noon Saturday, January 2nd, 2020, at the Floral Hills Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri.
Pallbearers will be; grandsons Zachary Owen, Matthew Christensen, Joel Owen Christensen, Garrett Christensen, Jon Claude Christensen, and Nolan Christensen. Erik Christensen-honorary pallbearer.
The family would like to recognize One Community Hospice for their compassion and support.
The family is also eternally grateful for the patience, kindness, and the endless loving care given by her angels; Emilia Smith, and Karla (with Valeria) Rodriquez.
