Edward Joseph Scanlon Sr., 88, passed away Thursday, February 2, 2017. Visitation will be from 9 – 10 a.m. Monday, February 6, 2017, at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 9401 Mission Rd., Leawood, KS followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.; burial in Mt. Calvary cemetery in Kansas City, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Solace House, 8012 State Line Rd., Shawnee Mission, KS 66208.
Edward Scanlon Sr. was born March 2, 1928, in Kansas City, MO. Ed grew up in Kansas City, Mo with 9 brothers and sisters. He went to Lillis High School where he was a gifted athlete and lettered in four sports. He attended Benedictine College in Atchison, KS on an athletic scholarship. During the Korean War, he served as a DJ for the Armed Forces Radio stationed in Germany. Once back to civilian life, he worked for Proctor and Gamble as a District Sales Manager. After meeting the love of his life, Ruby Mae Sebel, he married, and raised 4 children. Tragically he lost his wife at the Hyatt disaster and never found another love. He retired from Procter and Gamble after 33 years. He was very proud of his Irish roots and finally got the chance to travel to Ireland in 2006. Ed had a beautiful singing voice, a quick wit, and a brilliant sense of humor. He had a generous heart and took every opportunity to brag about his grandchildren. He was passionate about politics, Jayhawk basketball and Royals baseball.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ruby Scanlon, 6 siblings and son -In- law Mark Long. Survivors include his brother Larry Scanlon, sisters Anna Franke,and Theresa Grohman, son Edward Scanlon Jr, his wife Ann, daughters Erin Linden, Shawna Long, Bridget Brandmeyer and her husband John and seven grandchildren.
