Edward Joseph (Joe) Hickey II, 75, passed away March 23rd, 2022 at Research Medical Center after complications from a brain hemorrhage. Visitation will be from 5:30-7:30pm on Tuesday, March 29 at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 30 at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 7023 W. 71st Street, Overland Park, KS.
Joe was born July 9, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois and later relocated to the Kansas City area which became home for he, his parents and his five siblings. Following graduation from Shawnee Mission North, he was drafted into the Army where he served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged, Joe enrolled at Kansas State University where he completed a degree in Engineering. While at K-State he met his lifelong friend, Raju “Muk” Mukhi. Their friendship is one everyone should be lucky to have.
Joe married the love of his life, Margaret “Marty” Dent on May 27th, 1972. Together they lived full lives, loved their family unconditionally, rarely missed a family gathering or vacation to the lake – and most importantly raised two incredible sons, William Brian and Shawn Patrick. Joe's work transferred he and Marty to Dayton, Ohio where he eventually fulfilled his lifelong dream of owning his own business, Worker Automation.
We can’t write about Joe and Marty without mentioning their latest loves – grandchildren. Affectionately called G-Ma and G-Joe they wore a path on I-70 traveling from Ohio to Kansas City as often as possible to visit Kate, Leah, Claire and Will. Upon Marty’s passing in 2017, Joe decided to retire and move back to Kansas City to be closer to his family. We have cherished getting to spend more time with him over the last few years of his life.
Joe is now reunited with Marty in heaven…we envision him playing golf, watching K-State football, feasting on their favorite Italian dish and, of course, tiramisu (hope they have his Lactaid up there).
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marty Hickey, and his parents, Ed and Sue Hickey. He is survived by sons Brian (Karly) Hickey of Lenexa, KS and Shawn (Melissa) Hickey of Leawood, KS; four grandchildren: Kate, Leah, Claire and Will Hickey; sisters Carol (Larry) Blumel of Shawnee, KS, Patty (Don) Kincaid of Mission Hills, KS, and Lisa (Bob) Jackson of Raymore, MO; and brothers Phil (Darcy) Hickey of the Villages, FL and Billy (Kim) Hickey of Bucyrus, KS.
The funeral will be livestreamed from the following, for those that aren't able to attend in person.
