Ed Hauser, 90, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on October 25, 2017. After a long battle beating cancer, it was time to wave goodbye and be reunited with the beloved souls that beat him there, including: his first love and wife, Bev Hauser; his second wife, Billie Hauser; his parents Jack and Lillie Hauser; his brothers, Pete and Jack Hauser; his sisters, Helen Werkowitch and Dorothy Merrifield; his mother and father in-law, Toots and Rosie Phillips; his nieces, Cathy Hauser, Valerie Phillips, and Jackie Hauser; his in-laws, Gary Phillips, Marvin Love, Steve Werkowitch, and Dottie Hauser; his step children, Gary Ferguson, Rhonda Martin, and Cheryl Ferguson; and, many dear friends. When you live 90 years, a lot of loved ones beat you to heaven.
As for those of us left behind to miss him deeply, the long list includes: his son and daughter, Mark and D’Ann Hauser; his grandson, Matt (Laurie) Hauser; his granddaughter Jessica (Jared) McClure; his great-grandkids, Blake and Barrett Hauser, James Braden, and Mackenzy and Randy McClure; his stepson and stepdaughter, Claude Ferguson (Gladys) and June (Ed) Lockamy;
his step grandkids, Amy, Sarah, Belinda, Chad, Jelene, Roxanne, Rachel, Robert, Sean, and Tammy; his 16 step great-grandkids; his very dear friends Barbara Hubbell and Brooks Walters; and, many, many more loved ones.
Ed touched a lot of lives and was loved by many that will remember him with a smile and a story. Here is his story: On a cold and snowy night in January 1927, Dad was born. Just think about what life was like in 1927, and how different it was from now, almost a century later. Growing up with his brothers and sisters during the Great Depression, money was tight but humor and laughter were free. I expect that was the start of his fabulous sense of humor. Dad had a nickname for everyone. Mine was ‘DD BB Stink Pot Rat Fink’. Do you remember yours?
After graduating from De La Salle Military Academy, Dad joined the Navy where he proudly served his country on the USS Midway. He fell in love and married Mom (Bev), and started his own paint contracting company. He raised his kids in the house he still lived in until a few weeks ago. After Mom’s death in 1982, Dad found love again and married Billie. He had a lot of good times with her, and embraced her family as his own. Dad cared for Billie when she fell ill until her death in 2015.
Dad loved the Lake of the Ozarks, and was able to retire there from age 60 to 80. Needless to say, he passed that love on to us as well. Many great memories where made at the lake over the past 60 or so years. The past 10 years Dad returned to his home in Overland Park where he enjoyed having a beer (or 4) with his neighbors and family, tinkering with things around the house, and driving his convertible. He joked about how he got lots of waves in the convertible, but they were all from old men. So, as the story goes, Dad passed away on a warm autumn night in October 2017. His spirit will live on in so very many of us as long as we remember him and pass on his stories and good humor.
Ed’s funeral will be on Monday, October 30, 2017 at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home (I-435 & Holmes). Visitation will be at noon, followed by the funeral at 1:00. His casket will be carried by a horse drawn carriage. Following the burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, there will be a party at Margaritas in Martin City to celebrate his life with stories and smiles.
