Duane Max Mahon, 79, of Blue Springs, MO passed away at home on Friday, January 20, 2023 after a battle with cancer. Duane was born on February 15, 1943 in Kansas City, MO to his loving parents, Junior and Eleanor Mahon. In 1960, Duane met Diana Fisher at Raytown High School in a Business Law and Economics Class. He graduated from Raytown High School in 1961 and on October 26, 1963, Duane and Diana were married. They went on to have a family of four children and four grandchildren. In 1970, anticipating the birth of their third child, they built a home in Blue Springs and moved their growing family there.
When Duane was a teenager, he became a ‘professional’ popcorn popper and a lifeguard, or ‘professional swimmer’ as he liked to say, at Turner’s Swim Club. After high school, Duane went to college for 1 year before deciding to follow in the footsteps of Diana’s father and join Plumbers Local Union No. 8 of Kansas City to become an apprentice. Duane’s hard work and dedication lead him to become a master plumber. In 1971, he took a bold step and opened his own business, Circle Plumbing, in Blue Springs, MO where he worked in new construction in the growing community. The success of his business allowed him to invest in real estate in Blue Springs and he was able to retire from plumbing at an early age. He then spent his time managing the properties that he and Diana owned.
Duane was a dedicated father and loved to spend time with his family. They enjoyed spending summer days swimming at Turner’s until the late 70’s. Through the years, Duane took his family on many trips to Breckenridge and Keystone in Colorado where they enjoyed skiing, riding snowmobiles, ice skating and horseback riding. He loved watching his children play sports as they grew up. His son played baseball and football and he sponsored his daughters’ softball team for many years. He was at every game or tournament, standing on the fence line where they could hear him cheering them on. Duane was also a dedicated grandpa and was always there to support their grandchildren in life.
Duane and Diana shared many fun adventures during their life together. They enjoyed their many cars over the years which often filled the driveway. Duane loved to take Diana to Nevada where they would spend their time playing cards and entering slot tournaments in Las Vegas, Laughlin, and Mesquite. They were there so often that the regulars thought they were locals and were always surprised at how often Duane or Diana would win. They went to many concerts and shows in Las Vegas and would sometimes see celebrities out and about. Duane also enjoyed bowling, taking Diana to Surprise, Arizona to watch Royals Spring Training games, and golfing together at courses all over the United States. Duane also enjoyed going out to restaurants and loved a good steak.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Delores Riedel, son Todd Mahon, and grandson Tanner Mahon. Duane is survived by his wife of 59 years, Diana Mahon, three daughters, Dawn Erwin, Rhonda Mahon White (Doug), Robin Carney (Chris), and three grandchildren, David Mendelsohn, Jaci Carney, and Jaxon Carney. He will be missed dearly by all of them.
A visitation for Duane will be held Monday, January 30, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Newcomer's Floral Hills Funeral Home (7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133). The funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM followed by a graveside service at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens (Same Address).
