Doug was born August 31, 1937 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was very passionate and faithful. Doug’s life-long career started when he won a talent hunt at age 12, in the broadcasting industry at WDAF in Kansas City. His career later moved him to Denver, Colorado where he was the past owner and president of the news radio station KDEN from 1971-1989. Additionally, he was a past board member of the National Association of Broadcasters, along with leading many other regional broadcasting organizations in Colorado. He was an avid history enthusiast and sports fan, cheering on his favorite teams: Denver Broncos, Kansas City Royals, and KU Jayhawks.
Doug enlisted in the Air National Guard and later transferred to the Air Force Reserves, serving his country for 6 years before being honorably discharged in 1966. He earned degrees in history and broadcasting from University of Kansas along with a BA degree from Wichita State University in 1961. He was a life-long member of Community Christian Church in Kansas City, on the Plaza.
Doug was preceded in death by his wife Jane Stephens of Overland Park, KS., son Jeffrey Stephens, and parents Bernon and Elizabeth Stephens of Denver, CO.
He is survived by his sister Loretta Johnson of Chesterfield, MO, and his daughter Jennifer Butler of Denver, CO and her spouse Gary Butler, and four grandchildren Lindsey, Sidney, Mitchell, Olivia, and stepchildren Melodie Abernathy and Ken Smith of Kansas City, MO.
