Doris grew up in the Northeast area of Kansas City, Missouri. She attended Gladstone Elementary School and then graduated from Northeast High School in 1939. She took a secretarial course after highschool, then worked at Sears Roebuck, then the Kansas City, Kansas Medical Depot., and then at Charles Bruning Co, a blueprint company in downtown Kansas City.
She and her husband Jess Stout married June 17, 1944 and were married for 57 years before his passing. They were the proud parents of Don, Jim, Larry, and Donnajean, who all grew up in the Northeast area and were NE Highschool graduates.
Doris and Jess were 40 year members of Budd Park Christian Church and were active in church affairs. Doris was Flower Chairman, and because of this took a course at the Floral Design and Technology School and became a floral designer. Not only doing flowers for the church, but did the flowers for many of the church member's weddings. She was employed by Sands Floral Co. in downtown Kansas City until her employers retired and moved to Arizona. After moving to Lee's Summit, MO in 2000 they transferred their membership to Lee's Summit Christian Church.
She was the wife of Boy Scout Leader, Jess, and was a Den mother for each of her sons, and a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for Donnajean's troup.
Doris was a stay-at-home mom and thoroughly enjoyed the role. She also served in the pre-school and PTA organizations.
Doris was always interested in arts and crafts and was a talented watercolor and oil painter. She also liked quilting and doing needlepoint, giving away many items to relatives and friends.
She was an animal lover and always had a cat or dog, sometimes both at the same time.
She loved the beauty of flowers and volunteered at Powell Gardens for many years.
Jess and Doris moved to John Knox Village in June 2000 and made many kind, caring, wonderful friends there. She served on the Ambassador Committee and helped in other ways in the village. She always had a vegetable and flower garden and donated produce from it until she could no longer take care of a large garden.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Jess; and son, Jimm.
She is survived by children: Don (BJ) Stout, Larry (Delena) Stout and Donna (Kevin) Jobey; Grandchildren: Jessica (Clint) Bowers, Jacob (Janessa) Stout, Chris Stout, Courtney (Ryan) Richardson, and Ryan Jobey; Great-Grandchildren: Emma, Morgan, Max, Alex, JB, Rosie, Russell, Claire, Liam, Emily, Brody, Evan and Owen. She also leaves her beloved cat, Ginger.
Services will be held at Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd., on Monday, January 9, 2023. Visitation at 1:00, service at 2:00 with burial to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Wayside Waifs, an organization Doris felt strongly about.
