Donald M. Duncan having lived a full and productive life died peacefully surrounded by family on his birthday, at the age of 85.
Don was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, to Joseph and Josephine Duncan on January 6, 1929. He attended Ripon College, where he met his wife of more than 50 years, Diana Starnes Duncan. They were wed on January 26, 1952. Don and Diana moved to the East Coast, and Don graduated with his master's degree in engineering from MIT in 1954.
In 1958 Don and Diana moved to Kansas City, where they raised their children. Don worked for Woodward Clyde Consultants until the mid-80s when he started his own engineering consulting firm. His leadership, influence, knowledge, and professionalism helped his colleagues and clients and established him as a leader in geotechnical engineering in the Midwest. Don was an active member of the John Knox Presbyterian Kirk, serving as an elder and singing in the choir. Don loved sports, photography, music, and traveling. In addition to being a lifelong student his greatest joy was teaching and sharing his knowledge with those he loved, particularly his grandchildren. His smile, twinkling eye and sense of humor are already missed!
Don is survived by his sister Jan Brodhead; his son Joel and daughter-in-law Melinda Duncan; his daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Robert Edwards; and 5 grandchildren: Sarah, Daniel (Allison), Laura (Brian), Kiley and Scott.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at the John Knox Presbyterian Kirk, 11430 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145 on Saturday, January 11th 2 pm. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be given to the Kirk Memorial Fund where a remembrance is being planned.
