David was born on March 28, 1957, in Smithville, Missouri, but lived most of his life in Kansas City, Missouri. He grew up in the Platte Woods area of Kansas City, North and graduated from Park Hill High School in 1975. He briefly attended Park College (now Park University) where he played oboe in the Northland Symphony and was a member of the Park Pirates baseball team. Later, he enrolled in the University of Missouri at Kansas City, eventually graduating from the UMKC School of Law in 1995. He was admitted to the Missouri Bar in September of that year and to the Kansas Bar in May of 1996. He was also a member of the Massachusetts Bar beginning in 2006.
In 2001, David married Angela Bach, with whom he remained until his death. Together they lived mainly in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Kansas City, fixing and maintaining several historical homes. In 2010 David and Angie completed their family with the birth of their son, Henry.
Throughout his life, David had many interests, including historical home renovation, replica baseball uniforms, sports, and politics. He played many years in the Kansas City Men’s Senior Baseball League and was an avid fan of both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals. And he was a passionate defender of justice for everyone, no matter their social or economic status.
David was justifiably proud of many things in his life, including his lovely Hyde Park home, Angie’s accomplishments, and his work to provide legal representation for people with limited resources. But he was probably most proud of his son Henry, whom he cherished. Henry’s accomplishments, more than his own, were the joys of David’s life. In his own performances as a musician or an athlete, David was never nervous. But when Henry performed, David could barely contain himself in his wishes for Henry to excel. Nothing mattered more to David than Henry’s well being.
David is survived by his wife, Angela Bach Bryan, and his son, Henry Bryan, of the home; his mother, Rebecca Holyfield of Richmond, MO; his sister, Diana Bryan (Dale) of Richmond, MO; his brother Douglas Bryan (Fang) of North Kansas City, MO, his brother Drew Bryan of Parkville, MO; and his sister Daphne Bryan (Kirk) of Lawson, MO. In addition, he leaves behind his niece, Anna Findlay, and his nephews Andrew Bryan, Alex Bryan, Daniel Bryan, Bandon Decker, Reed Decker, and Lee Decker as well as a number of cousins and other family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Dale Bryan, and his sister, Denise Bryan Lorbecki.
A memorial service will be held Sunday August 13th, 2023 at Unity Temple on the Plaza at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to ALS research.
