Daniel George Jay Armstrong, 65, was called home after a three-year battle with lung cancer. Dan was born March 12th, 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri, son of Billy G. and Juanita (Bucher) Armstrong. He passed away on June 12th, 2016 at home surrounded by family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131 at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15th. Burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 14th, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, 5100 Ararat Drive, Kansas City, Missouri 64129 or Vote for Trump!!
After high school, Dan was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served two years. He was ranked a Spec. 5, 3rd Armored Division (Spearhead). He was a Battalion Command tank driver. Following his stint in the Army, Dan worked for Air Products, Chart Cryogenics and concluded his career with Apria Health Care as a Fill Plant Manager.
Dan was a member of the Abdallah Shrine, former President of the Mounted Patrol; member of the Peace Masonic Lodge #243 of Louisburg, Kansas; and member of the NRA. As an avid hunter Dan loved all things cammo. He hunted deer, turkeys and was also a competition raccoon hunter. Nothing made Dan happier than teaching young men to hunt – always insisting they hunt ethically. He never grew tired of exchanging hunting tales at the man cave.
Dan’s second love was street rods and muscle cars. He spent countless hours at cruise nights and car cruises. One of his bucket list items was to attend the 2015 Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit, Michigan. Dan arrived in style driving his own modified muscle car! He was a member of the Lone Wolf – No Club.
He was also a dog whisperer and was never without several canine companions. Dan raised many champion coon hounds.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Billy G. and Juanita N. Armstrong and his namesake, a nephew, Danny Cervone. Dan is survived by his wife, Vera Armstrong; children, Allison Smith and Katey Armstrong both of Cleveland, Missouri, Billy Armstrong of Overland Park, Kansas; step-daughter, Danna Spratling of Kansas City, Missouri; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by two sisters, Kathy Morken and husband Peter of Rockwall, Texas and Anita Miller and husband Larry of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Craig and wife Donna of Grain Valley, Missouri, and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
