Dana was the loving daughter of Cesare and Bette Merli, who preceded her in death. She grew up attending St. Elizabeth Catholic School and St. Theresa's Academy, later graduating from Avila College. She was a proofreader at Hallmark Cards, an elementary school teacher and long-time volunteer in Labor & Delivery at St. Joseph Medical Center. Dana's life was marked by her dedication to her family, her faith, and her community.
She married Mike Hughes in 1961, and together they raised a beautiful family, including their children Erin (John Ronan), Mike (Jean), and Steve (Katherine). Dana was a proud grandmother to Connor (Emily), Callie, Bennett, Abby (Brandon Weigel), Leigh, Aislinn, and Julia, and great-grandmother to Briggs. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Merli, and numerous relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
Dana's life was filled with joy from traveling, reading, and singing, but nothing compared to the time spent with her family. Her presence brought warmth and comfort to every gathering.
Visitation will be held July 19, 2024 at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at the Curé of Ars Catholic Church in Leawood, KS.
