Clara Reyes, the matriarch of the Reyes family and a beacon of love and strength, peacefully left this world on February 17, 2024, at 86 years old in Kansas City. Her unwavering spirit and the warmth of her generosity left an indelible mark on everyone she met.
Born into a family rich in cultural heritage and values, Clara embodied compassion and community. A proud mother, aunt, and friend, she nurtured those around her with an unconditional love that will continue to resonate through the lives of many.
Clara is revered for founding the bilingual Dos Mundos Newspaper in 1981. It serves as a vital link between Hispanic culture and the broader Kansas City population, breaking down cultural barriers and championing the cause of equality.
Clara's passion for her work was paralleled only by her commitment to advocacy, evidenced by her role as a founding member of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, MANA, and many other community groups. She tirelessly sought to amplify women's voices in business and politics. She continued to address the needs of Latinos in the area through Reyes Media Group, which operates 3 Spanish-language radio stations in Kansas City today.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel A. Reyes, and is survived by her beloved daughter, Diana Reyes-Raymer; her son, Edward Reyes; daughter-in-law, Susie Reyes; granddaughters, Veronica Acuna, Cynthia, Amanda, and Angela Raymer, as well as, Kate, Kylie Reyes; grandson, Alex Raymer; and a close-knit circle of extended family and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
Clara's family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. Her legacy of kindness and her zest for life will never be forgotten.
Let us honor Clara's memory by carrying on her legacy of love, passion, and service. Let us continue to champion the causes she held dear and strive towards a world of equality, understanding, and compassion.
Your memory will always be a guiding light for those lucky enough to know you. Thank you for everything, Clara. May we all strive to leave such a profound impact on our communities and the world around us.
A visitation for Clara will be held starting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 27, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 11300 W. 103rd St, Overland Park, KS 66214, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m.
