March 4, 1959 – August 22, 2023
On August 22, 2023, God lovingly embraced Catherine Sue Schroer and invited her home after a 4-year battle with terminal lung cancer. She was 64.
"Choose joy" – are the words which best embody the spirit of Cathy Schroer. She started each day with a desire to live in the moment with her friends and family.
Born March 4, 1959, in Kansas City, Missouri, Catherine Sue Womack graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School and proudly attended the University of Kansas. Cathy was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority at KU.
November 1, 1986, Cathy married Craig Schroer, the love of her life. For 37 remarkable years, they journeyed hand in hand, their love story an inspiration to all who knew them. Their shared experiences only strengthened their affection for one another.
Catherine was a loving mother to her children: Gretchen Rushing (husband Jordan), Kurt Schroer, and Stephen Schroer. Her unconditional love and unwavering support were administered with a knack for humor that could turn any situation into a laughing matter; and Cathy’s love for music was the soundtrack of her life that might turn every car ride into a karaoke session.
Cathy lived for sports and competition. She enjoyed golf, delighted at winning cards, and relished solving crossword puzzles with friends; but her true passion was tennis. In 2013, she captained her Women’s Tennis Team to the National Championships in Palm Springs, California.
As a snowbird in Phoenix, Cathy reveled in the fairways and greens, even when cancer attempted to slow her down. She showed us the true meaning of resilience, often making her way to the golf course with her oxygen tank in tow; a testament to her spirit – determined, fierce, and unyielding.
In addition to her husband and children, Cathy is survived by her father William Eugene Womack and his wife Margaret; her mother Alicia Anne Gerard (Hittner), her brother, Andrew Womack (wife Sue), and her sisters, Christy Roitz, and Beth Barbour (husband Randy).
Though Catherine may have played her final round, her love for family and friends, her passion for tennis and golf, and her indomitable spirit will forever shine as an example of how to “choose joy” in all circumstances. Cathy’s legacy is one of selfless love, determination, and an inspirational zest for life.
As we say goodbye, Cathy would ask us not to focus on her, but on our next joyful moment.
Please join us to honor the cherished life and enduring legacy of Cathy Schroer. Her presence graced the lives of many, and her memory will forever warm our hearts.
