She attended Mountain Grove High School where she met the late Winston Ackerman. They married in 1959 and moved to Springfield, MO where they raised their family.
Carol held various jobs throughout her life. Her factory work gave her the ability to wield a screwdriver like nothing you have ever seen. She made an appointment with the Arthur Murray school of dance for ballroom dancing lessons. After a few lessons, she was offered a position of dance instructor and held this position for several years. This was also around the same time dancing in the living room became an almost daily ritual.
She worked in area school cafeterias in Springfield, MO and made many life long friends. This career continued after moving to Kansas City, MO in 1973, where she amassed even more friends and learned to cook for and serve a crowd. Carol loved to prepare more food than anyone could eat in one sitting. It was guaranteed you would leave her dinners with plenty of left overs to take with you.
Carol loved angels, inspirational “art,” The Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, watching the “Andy Griffith Show” daily and playing cards and games.(She could beat the pants off of everyone in a game of Andy Griffith trivia). She loved playing penny slots at the casino for hours on end or until her pennies ran out, going on adventures with her brothers and sisters, and loving on people.
First and foremost, Carol was a dedicated mother. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially enjoyed her role as Grandma and Great Grandma. She had a vibrant personality and always made people around her laugh, often exclaiming; “Isn't this fun?!”
She made friends everywhere she went.
She will be sorely missed and survived by daughters; Teresa Fisher (Harry) and Kimberlie Hickerson (Craig), her “baby” brother; Gerald Brown, “Sissy”; Mary E. Lovelady, Grandchildren; Matthew, Lindsey and Angela, Great grandchildren; Colton, Cooper, Addison, Kinsley and Kali, as well as many, many nieces and nephews and their children. All of whom she loved and touched deeply.
Carol was preceded in death by her brothers; Morgan, Mitchell, Leroy and James, Sisters; Norma Anne, Martha Jane and Nadine, son; Winston D. “Skip” Ackerman II and grandson; Brett Baslee.
All who loved her dearly will never forget her tenacity, wit, charm, grace and undying love and caring for them.
A memorial service will be planned at a future date when we can gather safely.
