Carl Max Anderson

Carl Max Anderson, age 84, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 1, 2021, at home surrounded by his loving family. Carl was the first of three children born to Harold and Mildred “Lucille” Anderson. He grew up in Chanute, Kansas and graduated from both Chanute High School and Chanute Junior College. He then transferred to Baker University, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He was a proud member of the football team, which won the conference championship his senior year (one of his favorite highlights). He graduated from Baker in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Following graduation, Carl worked for the Aetna Casualty Surety Co. handling insurance claims before moving to Topeka to attend Washburn University School of Law. He was initiated into the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity in 1971. After he received his law degree he worked as an investigator and then practiced with the law firm of Goodell, Casey, Briman, Rice and Cogswell. Carl then worked for the state of Kansas for 12 years as assistant general counsel at the Kansas Corporation Commission, and 8 years as the assistant attorney general assigned to the consumer protection anti-trust division. For the next 12 years he assisted four executive directors for the Kansas Lottery, and then retired in 1999.

Other significant achievements include: 6 years of service in the National Guard, president of the Fairlawn Plaza Optimist Club, president of the Carriage House, a drop-in counseling service for troubled youth, and a member of the board of directors of the Combat Air Museum of Topeka.

He is survived by: his loving wife of 56 years, Barbara “Bobbie” Anderson, sister Sue (Yancy) Whitworth and brother, Joe Anderson; children Doug (Joy) Anderson, Diane (Rob) Patton, Greg Anderson, Gretchen Masters; grandchildren Tyler (Michelle), Trevor and Tarra Anderson, Bradley (Heather), Andrew (Jackie) and Grant Burnside, Lucy, Calvin, Max, Layla and Rocco Masters, and Lauren and Dylan Anderson. Great grand-children include Tate Anderson and Blake Burnside, with Davis Burnside due in November.

After his retirement Carl and Bobbie moved to Leawood to be closer to family.

He enjoyed the many activities his 13 grandchildren were involved in, cheering them on in basketball, soccer, baseball and football games, and attending dance recitals, drill team performances and cheerleading competitions, etc…

Other favorite activities of Carl included playing golf, boating, fishing, and especially hunting. He enjoyed tailgating at KSU football games and watching KU basketball and Chiefs football games, He was also a bridge player and avid reader.

A group of 10 couples they met through Leawood Welcomers when they first moved to Kansas City, has been a staple of their social life for years, with monthly dine-outs, and frequent game-watch and holiday parties.

Carl will be remembered for his kindness, his integrity, and his loyalty. Despite a multitude of health problems over the past 10 years, Carl remained as active as possible and kept a positive attitude, never one to complain. A Celebration of Life is being planned for November.
