Clyde Alan Garner, 72, passed peacefully March 9, 2024, at Bishop Spencer Place, Kansas City, Missouri. Alan was born May 6, 1951, in Rolla, Missouri, to Melvin Leonard Garner and Evelyn Moreland Garner.
Alan was predeceased by his parents, his aunt Helen Louise Sweet, Ruby Garner, and wife Susan Higgins Garner. He is survived by his son Andrew Alan Garner, of the home; sister-in-law and husband Laura and Jeff Tyler; niece and husband Laura Louise and Travis Strawn; nephew and wife Jackson and Lauren Tyler and their children Rivers and Joanna, all of Kansas City, Missouri.
Alan grew up in Rolla, Missouri. He was a National Merit Scholar and graduated valedictorian from Rolla Senior High School in 1969. Following high school, Alan attended the University of Missouri-Columbia, and graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He continued his education at Harvard where he earned his Ph.D. in Economics in 1977. From 1977 to May 1984, Alan was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Finance and Business Economics at the University of Notre Dame. In July 1984, Alan began his career as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City where he became an Assistant Vice President and Economist in 1995. His specialty was Macroeconomics. He was a frequent lecturer and prolific writer of numerous articles examining economy-wide trends. In 2008, Alan returned to teaching, and taught economics in the School of Business at Avila University in Kansas City.
Alan's favorite past time was spending time with Susan and Andrew and extended family. He did so regardless of the challenge such as the period when he had occasion to spend time at the Denver Branch of the Federal Reserve during which he never missed an opportunity to encourage, attend and celebrate Andrew's achievements. Later, when Susan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, Alan was her steadfast and loving caregiver.
Alan was an active member of Country Club Christian Church where he and Susan met and married June 2, 1990. As a member and Elder at Country Club Christian Church, Alan was generous with his time and talent and served on the Trustee Committee of the Board of Elders. Alan was highly intelligent but unassuming. Those attributes combined with his dry sense of humor made him a pleasure to know. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
A joint Celebration of Life for Alan and Susan is scheduled at 2:00 p.m., May 31, 2024, in the Combs Chapel at Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, Missouri, followed by Interment at the Columbarium and Reception in the Parlor.
Donations in Alan's memory can be made to Country Club Christian Church or the Parkinson's Foundation.
