Bruce Dee “Mac” McFarland passed from this life Nov. 4, 2023, aged 74, at his home in Raytown, MO. In keeping with his wishes and his philosophy that “not much fuss” should be made, his family will have a private remembrance at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to City Union Mission or any other organization supporting the homeless.
Mac was born Feb. 9, 1949, in Clarinda, Iowa, the second child of Charles Frank McFarland and Dorothy Maxine (nee McCoy) McFarland. He moved with his family to the Kansas City area in the 1950s, where his father took work with the railroad. Mac followed and spent his working life with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, retiring after 40 years. He spent his retirement years caring for his home and garden, spending time with family, and keeping up with his grandchildren. He had a keen interest in history and spent many hours exploring biographies, podcasts and documentaries.
Mac was a wonderful father and steadfast provider to his two children, Steven McFarland and Darla (McFarland) Graham, both born of Joan (nee Pallanich) Neal. He was overjoyed when they had their own families. Steven and his wife, Ashlee Crowl, brought into his life his precious grandson Langston, 6, and granddaughter Clair, 3. Fiona Graham, 12, daughter of Darla, had the privilege of his love and affection every day. He will always be remembered in their hearts as the “Goofy Grampy.”
Mac was blessed to spend his last 23 years with his loving wife, Carla McFarland, who also brought into his life sons, Brian Young and wife Cathy, and Kevin Young and wife Jo Marie, their children and grandchildren – Justin, Quinton and wife Shannen, Arisa and husband Curtis, Ally and partner Sage, Devon, and great-grandchildren Felicity and Mia. The care and connection Mac held in this family was central to his life and happiness.
He deeply loved and cared for his three sisters, Cynthia “Cay” McCaulley, surviving, and Patty Jo McFarland and Leigh Heusel, who proceeded him in death. He held a special place in his heart for his four nieces – Patty Cay Bowers, Pamela Guillaume, Jessica Martinez and Jennifer Heusel.
Mac was a straight-forward man. He could be counted on to take care of things, lend a helping hand, and live up to his responsibilities. He would want to know, and we hope he did know, that he did a good job. Rest easy Mac.
