Bernie Wood passed away peacefully September 2, 2022. Bernie was born on October 30, 1926. She grew up in Kansas City, Missouri and married her loving husband Dick Wood on September 18, 1948. They have celebrated 73 wonderful years of marriage.
Bernie was an amazing Wife, Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma and even Great Great Grandma. She was loved by all her family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 73 years Richard ‘Dick’ Wood. She leaves behind her children Kathy (John), Terry (John), Jeff (Lynn), Jim (Tricia) and Rick (Jane). She also leaves behind 11 grandchildren Jay (Amy), Julie, Scott (Carolann), Andy (Cindy), Dan (Nadia), David (Christina), Jenny (Todd), Becca (Todd), Bryan (Kate), Patrick (Courtney), and Marty. She was blessed to have Great Grandchildren Ashley (Nick), Emily (Nick), Brenden, Cameron, Leo, Ella, Lilly, Abby, Austin, Liam, Amelia, Evan, Wesley, Sam, Logan, Kyle, Hudson, Parker Belote, Parker Wood, Nathaniel, and Jonas, and her Great Great Grandson Mason.
She is preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Chris Wood, parents Mary Madeline and Bryan Ballard and her sister Mary Quanty. She is survived by her sister Juanita Beaven-Wood.
Bernie enjoyed her time working as an Administrative Assistant at Rockhurst College and Rockhurst High School. During retirement she and Dick lived in Bella Vista, Arkansas where they made many friends and enjoyed participating in activities such as golf, Guess Who is Coming to Dinner and playing Mahjong. Bernie always made you feel welcome in her home. She often visited her kids and their families and enjoyed helping them move or just spending time with them. She was an amazing cook, noted for her Chicken Elegante Casserole, homemade pies, chex mix and cookies.
Her family has many fond memories of holidays and family dinners spent at the farm and lake house. She loved crafting, going to art fairs, antiquing and Bingo. Many of her family members still have handmade crafts that she and Dick made over the years in their homes as a daily reminder of what a sweet, talented and thoughtful woman she was.
Bernie and Dick returned to Kansas City to be near family and chose the Santa Marta Retirement Community as their home. The family would like to thank the staff and medical personnel at Santa Marta for their excellent care of Bernie over the last 12 years.
Services will be held on Saturday, September 17, in the chapel at Santa Marta. Visitation from 9:30-10am, Mass of Christian Burial at 10am. A Committal Service will follow at 11:30am at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
