Barbara was born February 2, 1934, to John (Jack) and Maude Henderson in Orrington, Maine. Barbara had one brother Herbert (deceased). After graduating from Brewer High School in 1951 she went on to complete her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Rockhurst College in 1974 and her Certified Public Accounting licensure in 1976 on her first attempt and her Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Missouri in Kansas City in 1991.
Barbara was proud of the fact she had started her working career at the age of 14 in a local bank earning .14 cents an hour. After graduating college, she became a governmental accountant and eventually an auditor for Health and Human Services where she earned the rank of G-13 and was awarded numerous Special Citation Awards over her 30+ year career before retiring in 1995.
In 1957 Barbara met Fred Lee Shamblin (deceased 2013) in Texas near where Fred was stationed. They were married December 12, 1957, and Fred adopted Vicki Karen Griswold in 1959 and they adopted David Lee Shamblin in 1967. Vicki has two stepchildren with her husband Danny Griswold, Chris, and Brandon (deceased). Dave and his wife Timi have two daughters, Anna and Lea.
Barbara was an avid Bridge player, achieving a Master Level and enjoyed organizing Bridge matches at John Knox Community where she spent time with her many good friends. She was a lover of animals and had dogs and cats of many sizes and temperaments over her years. Barbara was proud of the opportunities and freedoms that were afforded her and her family by this great country and supported many charitable causes to share what she had been able to achieve and hopes others will do the same.
Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00am followed by a Memorial Service for Barbara will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at McGilley State Line Chapel. A reception will follow for friends and family at Loch Lloyd Country Club. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one of Barbara’s favorite charities Wayside Waifs (www.waysidewaifs.org) or The Heritage Foundation (www.heritage.org).
