Barbara was born April 15, 1930 in Humbolt, KS to Harlan and Jean (Flint) Ellis. She married Juel Bartels and they made Kansas City their home with their two children, Julie and James. She was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ.
Barbara’s daughter, Julie, was born with Spina Bifida and for 33 years she devoted most of her time and energy to caring for Julie. She received great support from the Spina Bifida Association and in return supported others through that organization.
Barbara especially enjoyed working with the “bazaar ladies” of Bethel. She willingly and lovingly made goblins and ghosts, as well as many other design details. Her T.O.P.s ladies and meetings were something she always looked forward to seeing and attending. She served as secretary for many years. Her friends and relatives knew her as a quiet but strong person who spent most of her life serving others.
Proceeding her in death are her parents; her loving husband, Juel Bartels; dear daughter, Julie Bartels; and brother Dr. Richard Phipps, Barbara is survived by her son, James Bartels; grandson Shaun (Nichole) Bartels; great-grandson Nevan Bartels, and sister-in-law Mary Phipps.
In honor of Barbara, the family suggests contributions to the Bethel United Church of Christ. Arrangements provided through McGilley Antioch Chapel, 816-453-7700.
