Sonny was born on July 21, 1942 to Alfonso and Victoria Estrada. He was a 1960 graduate of Northeast High School, where he played football and basketball. After high school Sonny worked various jobs until landing a position at Bayer Crop Sciences. He retired in 2003 after 34 years of service. Sonny enjoyed coaching his sons and neighborhood kids on basketball and baseball teams in the Northeast Community. He also worked part-time at the Northeast Owl Center for several years and made numerous friends. After his retirement, Sonny spent time with his wife and grandkids. Gpa, as he was affectionately called, would drive the grandkids everywhere, including less than one block walk to school each day. He truly enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren. Sonny was a loyal KC Chiefs, Royals and KU basketball fan. You could stop by his house any day and catch him watching the game. Sonny loved talking about the ‘old days’ and was always eager to share memories.
He was preceded in death by; his father, Alfonso Estrada Sr.; mother, Victoria (Gamino) Estrada; wife, Rachel Estrada; and brother, Richard S. Estrada.
Survivors include; children, Renee Estrada-Quinde (Henry), Mark Estrada Sr., Christopher Estrada, and Mike Estrada; brothers, Gary Estrada (Phyllis) and Manuel Estrada; grandchildren, Martin Estrada, Enrique Vargas, Marina Estrada, Andrea Estrada, Mark Estrada Jr., and Angelina Aguilar.
A Visitation for Sonny will be held Friday, June 23, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 416 W 12th St., Kansas City, MO 64105, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:15 PM.
Serving as pallbearers are; Enrique Vargas, Bobby Lopez Jr., Tanner Graf, Mark Estrada Jr., Richard L. Estrada and Ryan Reffett.
