Albert Joe Combs, 88, Kansas City, Missouri, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital on August 21, 2011, due to complications of a fall. Inurnment is 1 p.m., Saturday, September 17, in the Garden Walk of Memories at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at Little Sisters of the Poor, 8745 James A. Reed Rd., Kansas City, Missouri 64138. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor.
Joe was born May 18, 1923, to James E. and Alice Prior Combs in Kansas City, Kansas. During WWII he served as a bombardier-navigator with the Army-Air Corps. Joe was a lifelong printer. After retirement, he traveled the country with his dogs Duncan and then Freddie, often buying and selling old books. He compiled and published a book of his best loved poetry and short stories. Along with reading he loved playing chess.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Donald E. Combs, Sr., and three infant brothers. He is survived by daughter, Cheryl Tenneson (Michael), Elkland, Missouri; son, Glenn Combs, Sunrise, Florida; brother, James E. Combs, Jr. (Grace), Newton, Kansas; sister-in-law Lorraine Combs, Lee’s Summit, Missouri; and three grandchildren, Gabriel (Michella), Joshua, and Anna Tenneson; and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements under the direction of Mount Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, Kansas City, Missouri.
