Wm F. Zimmer was born at Ames, Kansas on Oct. 20, 1920 and died Nov. 17, 2015 at age 95. His family lived on a farm southwest of Concordia, KS. At age 18, he joined the “Three C’s”, Civilian Conservation Corps for two years at Marysville, KS. He then went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad out of Kansas City, working until World War II came.
William joined the United States Army and was sent across the Pacific Ocean to Iran to work in the railroad shop in Tehran, sending Land Lease supplies to Russia. He was overseas 31 months.
After Germany surrendered, William was sent back to the U.S., across the Atlantic Ocean, completing the trip around the world. He continued working for Union Pacific for a total of 25 years.
He married Faye Herbert who later died of cancer. In 1980, he married Barbara Hawkins celebrating 35 years of marriage in June of this year, prior to Barbara’s death. They have attended Maywood Community Church since 1981. Bill surrendered his life to Jesus Christ and was confident of his salvation. The hard blows dealt to him by life counted for nothing compared to the rest and peace provided by Jesus our loving Savior, guide and defender.
