Vernon Charles Green, age 95, of Olathe, Kansas passed away on Friday, April 7, 2023. Vernon C. Green was born in 1927, to Vernon Ray Green and Dora Mills. He was next to youngest of nine children: Bessie, Art, Edna, Francis, Cecil, Herb, Doris, Vernon, Bobby. His middle name referenced Charles Lindberg. Some called him Charlie, but Vernon didn’t like it.
Vernon's parents ran a grocery at 53rd and State Avenue in KC Kansas. Vernon helped his brother, Herb, at a service station next door.
Vernon attended Turner High School. He left High School to enter the Navy, 23 Sep 1944. He was a medical Corpsman, working in a Navy hospital commissary. He served near San Diego. He and others worked, off hours, at the Del Rio Race Track, and met some celebrities.
Vernon and his first wife, Joan Renne, had daughter Karen in 1948. Vernon joined the Roman Catholic Church. By 1958 Vernon was divorced and living with his mother and grandmother. His married daughter, Karen Worth, died in 2010.
Vernon was a bartender. That is where he met Emma Christine Cornell . Vern was a caring and responsible dad to step-children, Linda and Cheryl Smalley. He has commented several times how pleased he is to have been "taken in" by the Cornell family. Vernon and Christine were married for more than sixty years.
“Vern worked as a fabrication welder for Darby Corporation, till he injured his back. With workman's compensation, Vernon became a Liquor Store owner, July 13, 1970. His store was at 47th and Mission Rd.
He was active in business organizations that met for luncheons at Golden Ox. He was president of the Rosedale Business Association and president of the Rosedale Local Development Corporation.
He joined with the Shriners and attended parades, riding his Trail 70 mini motor bike. Vernon was on a bowling league at St Agnes. He enjoyed fishing and spent many hours on the golf course with his brother, Cecil and friends.
In the late 1990’s Vernon and Christine moved from Westvale Road in Kansas City Kansas to Olathe, KS. In later years Vern enjoyed riding his mower and caring for his lawn, tomatoes and apple trees among very caring neighbors and not far from his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
