Tommy Weldon Overman, 88, of Olathe, Kansas passed away December 6, 2022. Tommy was born on August 21, 1934 in Abilene, Texas to Herman and Lucille (Vickers) Overman. After graduating from Abilene High School, Tommy attended Texas Tech University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in geology.
Tommy married his high school sweetheart, JoAnn Huckabay, in 1955 and joined the United States Navy in 1959. He completed flight school and was commissioned as a Naval Officer in 1960. Tommy retired from active duty as a Lieutenant Commander in 1966 and continued in the Reserve with the Navy Sea Bees in Kansas City, Missouri. During Tommy’s active duty, he and JoAnn traveled the world with stations in Pensacola, Florida; New Iberia, Louisiana; Coronado Naval Station in San Diego, California; and Meridian, Mississippi; and with time in Japan and Hawaii during two tours in the Western Pacific.
After retiring from active duty, Tommy became a pilot for Trans World Airlines (TWA) and moved to the Kansas City area with his family. He flew for TWA domestically and internationally for 25 years; in 1973 he was awarded Flight Deck Man of the Year. Tommy retired from TWA as a Captain in 1991. He and JoAnn moved back to Texas (Horseshoe Bay in the beautiful Hill Country) where they enjoyed many years of recreation with friends and family. In 2007 they moved back to the Kansas City area to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Tommy was a talented craftsman and enjoyed his life-long hobbies of woodworking, sculpting and painting. During his time in Horseshoe Bay, Tommy became an avid golfer and enjoyed organizing the weekly games. He was active in the Horseshoe Bay Property Owners Association and served as their president, and he was also involved with the local theatre as a set builder. Tommy cherished the time he spent with his three sons and his grandchildren, and he especially enjoyed watching all three boys play high school football on Friday nights. He also enjoyed sharing his talent with his family and built several family heirlooms over the years that will be treasured forever.
Tommy is survived by his wife JoAnn; children, Damon, Ben (Stacy) and Tim (Kristin) Overman; and grandchildren, Katie, Hannah, Tommy, Annie and Molly Overman.
A private ceremony will take place in January at Leavenworth National Cemetery and will be followed by a celebration of life closer to home. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Tommy’s name to the Olathe Health Hospice House at 15310 Marion Street, Olathe, Kansas 66061.
