Steve Hoit, age 63 of Shawnee, KS, passed away on November 13, 2017 after a six month fight with pancreatic cancer. A 1972 graduate of Turner High School, Steve married his high school sweetheart Gayla (Haynes). They celebrated 43 years of marriage in April. Steve is the father of Jenny (Chuck) Payne, Mike (Miranda) Hoit, and Mindee (Jonathan) McDonald. He is Papa to Lauren (13) and Makenna (11) Payne, Harrison (8) and Presley (6) Hoit, and Jackson (6), Layla (2), and Alexis (7 months) McDonald. Steve retired from UPS after 40 years of service upon learning of his diagnosis. He was a member of Westside Family Church.
The son of Robert and Carol, Steve grew up in Muncie the oldest of five siblings – Starr Freeman, Kevin Hoit, Janie Bustamante, and Tom Hoit. He was a good student and enjoyed playing football, basketball, and baseball. His Dad tells stories of his feats on the ball diamond and he was the quarterback of the varsity football team at Turner. A lifelong fan of Kansas City sports, Steve would take the bus to Municipal Stadium to watch the Chiefs. The family attended Glad Tidings Assembly of God where Steve was involved in youth and children’s ministries and played on the church’s basketball and softball teams.
Steve’s involvement in the Turner community spanned decades. He coached numerous sports teams and recognized the field or court as a place to teach commitment, teamwork, and integrity. He would transport players that needed rides and without him may not have been able to play. Steve was elected to the Turner School Board in 1987, serving through 2003 and as president during a portion of his tenure. He was inducted into the Turner Walk of Fame in 1991.
A strong, active, and healthy man, a cancer diagnosis came as a shock to Steve’s family and friends. Steve saw the opportunity to walk the faith he had always professed. A quote Steve had kept – “Someday you’re going to read in an obituary that I have died. Don’t you believe it; for in that moment I will be more alive than I have ever been.” D.L. Moody
Services will be held at Westside Family Church, Lenexa, KS on Saturday, November 18th. The family will greet friends from 10AM – Noon with the service directly following. Entombment will be immediately following at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Steve Hoit Memorial Scholarship fund, established as an annual scholarship to recognize a Turner High School senior demonstrating the qualities we loved about Steve.
