Phillip was born in Kansas City, Kansas to the late Viola Leona Hancock and Phillip Cohen. He attended Sumner High School and graduated in 1967.
In 1966, the summer before his senior year, he decided to marry his devoted wife, Katie. He was drafted in the Army in 1967 then decided to make a career of military service. After 22 years in the Army, he retired and relocated with his family to the Washington, DC area. They bought a home in Maryland. Because of his outstanding military record, Phillip was requested to join the United States Secret Service. He retired from the Secret Service to care for his wife, Katie, who was very ill.
Phillip was a faithful member of the Church. He was an Ordained Deacon and the Head Usher in Maryland. He was also a Master Mason in Cecil A. Ellis Lodge #110 in Germany and Roscoe C. Cartwright Lodge #129 of Maryland. After returning to Kansas City, he demitted to St. James Lodge #59. He was a Lifetime member of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter number 317 and a Lifetime member of the NAACP. Recently, he joined Bible Temple Missionary Baptist Church.
Phillip received many noteworthy honors and awards from his lengthy military service---Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal 3rd Award, Army Commendation Medal with Second Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal with 3rd Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal with Sixth Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign with Sixth Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and numerous Letters of Appreciation and Commendations.
Phillip loved his family. His daughter, Phillina. His boys—Robert, Phillip II and Paul (wife-Akilah). And especially his grandchildren—Tyrik, Jessey, Ty’ron, Aaliyah, Payton, and Paul JR Cohen. They were the delight and joy of his heart!!!!!!
The entire family will cherish his memory: His sisters: Beverly Gaskin (Stanford—both preceded him in death), Brenda Wilson and Gwendolyn Thompson (Jimmy). Mother-in-law Gladys Mitchell, Stepfather in-law Levell Mitchell (preceded him in death). His sisters and brothers-in-law: Sandra Easterwood, Lenora Seamster (Elmer-preceded him in death), Stanley Mitchell, Cynthia Mabon (Aaron), Rosetta Milsap, Lydia Weatherspoon. And his special friends that he has loved throughout the years: Verton F. Ivory, Jason Price and Charlie Johnson.
A visitation for Phillip will be held on Friday, June 21, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Bible Temple Missionary Baptist Church, 2804 Hiawatha Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66104. Followed by the funeral service will at 10:00 AM. A graveside will occur Friday, June 21, 2024 at 12:30 PM at Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Road, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048.
