Gretta was born November 1, 1929, to James Robert and Frances (McCoin) Nuttle in Wichita KS and grew up in Spring Township, Butler Co KS.
With an education beginning in a one-room grade school, she graduated from El Dorado KS High School, attended Washburn University at Topeka, and Kansas University (B.S. Elementary Education, 1968). She taught in Kansas City KS and Shawnee Mission elementary schools and was a volunteer in the Johnson County Library Local History Room.
Gretta was active in 4-H; an executive member of Family and Community Education (FCE) from local to national levels; and involved in Kansas State Historical Society and the Johnson Co Genealogy Society. She was very active in Masonic organizations including Job’s Daughters; 75-year member of Eastern Star; Daughters of the Nile (Past Queen and Princess Recorder); Social Order of the Beauceant; and Order of the True Kindred. She held lifetime memberships in Washburn and Kansas Universities Alumni Associations, Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity, and D.A.R.
Gretta was married 18 December 1948 to Albert Merritt Ross who preceded her in death June 3, 2020. She is survived by three daughters Harriett “Hatti” Ross, Dr. Gretchen Ross Hill, and Nava Renaud (Chris), and son Dr. Albert Marshall Ross IV (Kathy); 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchild; her sister Eda Jean Woolf-Nixon.
Services will be at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N 94th St, Kansas City KS on Monday, February 20, 2023 at 2:30 pm, Visitation will be be from 2:00-2:30 pm before the funeral. Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Gretta’s honor may be made to Daughters of the Nile Convalescent Endowment Fund (credited to El Maat Temple #120); Extension Council Foundation of Johnson Co KS; Southminster Presbyterian Church, Prairie Village KS; or charity of one’s choosing.
