Joseph L. Meli, 88, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away at home, Saturday, March 26, 2011.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 1, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1086 N. 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m., Thursday at the Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas where a Rosary will be Prayed at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Odyssey Hospice or St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Joe was born July 19, 1922 in Manhattan, New York to Salvatore and Josephine Meli. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Aviation, he was employed by Trans World Airlines. He entered the US Navy during WWII and served on the aircraft carrier USS Hornet CV12 until his discharge in1945. After his discharge, he continued his employment with TWA until his retirement in 1982. Joe was an accomplished baseball player and Italian Chef and was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years: Angela Rose Salvato, and his daughter: Jo Ann Wendel.
Survivors include his sons: Lawrence J. Meli and wife Merry of Kansas City, Kansas and Thomas P. Meli and wife Nancy of Clever, Missouri; 7 grandchildren: Anthony, Melissa, Nicholas, Andrea, Mark, Jeff and Susan; and 6 great-grandchildren.
