Evelyn M. Hemphill, 95, Bonner Springs, Kansas passed away May 1, 2019. She was a resident and friend at Legend Healthcare in Tonganoxie, KS. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 11AM at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., Kansas City, Kansas. A visitation will begin at 10AM, also at the funeral home. Evelyn was born on October 29, 1923 in Milwaukee, WI to Robert and Gladys Newkirk. She was raised in Oklahoma and then moved to Kansas City. Evelyn married J. Eugene Hemphill on December 24, 1949 in Kansas City, Missouri. Together they owned a bowling alley, where she worked at the snack bar, she then became a seamstress at Swingster Manufacturing. Finally, she retired from Champ Service Line in Edwardsville, KS where she worked in shipping for UPS.
In her younger years Evelyn loved to dance the Jitterbug with her husband. She also enjoyed cooking, watching mostly cooking shows and crafting ceramics in her spare time. But most of all she cherished the time that she was able to spend with her granddaughters.
Evelyn was preceded in passing by her husband, J. Eugene in 1969; son, Walter (Sam) Jordan; granddaughter, Lori Ann Jordan; siblings, James Newkirk and his wife Dolly, Bill Newkirk, Bea Newkirk, Betty Shroy and her husband Richard, Jerry Newkirk; sister-in-law, Barbara Newkirk; and daughter-in-law, Donna Hemphill.
Evelyn is survived by her children, Shirley Cain, Tom Hemphill, and Sandra Norton and her husband Richard; grandchildren, Amanda Cain and her fiancé Matt Mayer, Jamie Wilks and her husband Colby, Jim Collins, Gary Trotter and Debbie Moore; son-in-law, Ivan Cain; 3 great grandchildren; brother, Cloyce Newkirk; sister, Mettie Newkirk; and many other family and friends.
