Ernie was born November 5, 1920 in Marion, Kansas to Jonas and Clara (Hein) Mohn. He played football and graduated from Marion, Kansas High School. He married Ruth Call at nineteen and enlisted in the National Guard and was then drafted into the Air Force and then Army. Ernie served in the 6th US Army, 102nd Infantry Division, 805 Engineering Aviation Battalion and served in Okinawa and Ie Shima under General Brehon Somervell. He helped build landing strips and he witnessed the capitulation of Japan at the end of the war. Ernie married Joan Hall and after their divorce, married Nadra Maxine Mohn. Ernie worked highway construction, first for Harry Henry, then Aldridge, and lastly Fred Murray Construction, where he worked until he was in his 70s. If you’ve driven on a major highway in the State of Kansas, you’ve probably driven on one of Ernie’s roads. He was a loyal member of the Operator’s Union #101. After retiring from highway construction, he opened his own business and would do small-scale construction projects well into his 80’s. Ernie belonged to the Moose Lodge and attended Village Community Church. He was definitely a “workaholic,” but he wintered in Florida for many years, as “everything tastes better in Florida.”
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nadra Maxine Mohn; his brother, Elvin Mohn; his sister, Barbara Lehrman; his son-in-law, Sonny Heckman; and his granddaughter, Patricia Blodgett.
Ernie is survived by his children, Marilyn Heckman, Earline Brazel, Kenneth Leroy Mohn and his wife Theresa, Garry Hall and his wife Sherry, Ellen McGrath, Carol Simmons and her husband Bob, Donna Martin and her husband Bill, and Jeannie Marie Teske; his step-children, Brenda Lightfoot and her husband Jerry, Darrell Parker and his wife Ann, and Terrie Cumbie and her partner Robert King; his sister, Leona Lehrman; as well as eighteen grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren, fourteen great-great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
