Carl W. Johns, 96, of Kansas City, KS passed away peacefully at home with family members by his side on December 21, 2014. Born December 2, 1918, he lived his life in the St. Joseph, MO and Kansas City, KS area. Carl was a Staff Sergeant in the US Army Air Forces, served with the 8th Air Force 401st Bomber Group, 612th Bombardment Squadron at Thorpe Bomber Base, England. He flew 32 missions as a ball turret gunner in a B17 flying fortress and was honored with three air medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Carl was a member of the Heartland Honor Flight of Oct. 7, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, and wife, Eloise. Carl is survived by his sister, Lillian Nold (Robert), and son, Marvin Johns (Linda). He has two grandchildren, Jeffrey Johns (Tanya) and Denise Daicy (Angela) and four great-grandchildren, Tevin, Whitney, Jack, and Jefferson. Carl was a simple man, a child of the depression, a member of the Greatest Generation, a decorated WWII hero, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a great-grandfather, a companion, and a proud American. He was loved and is already missed.
Visitation will be from 1-2 pm, Sat., Dec. 27th and services will follow at 2:00 p.m., all at Chapel Hill – Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., KCK. Interment with Honors will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
