Betty Joan Johansen, 83, Kansas City, Kansas passed away April 1, 2017. Betty was born in Irving, Kansas and lived in White Cloud, Reserve and Hiawatha, Kansas. While her husband was in the military, she lived with him in El Paso, Texas and after he went to Korea she moved to Falls City, Nebraska before moving to Kansas City in 1957. She was married to Edward Johansen and together they had four children.
Betty was an accountant for Sweet Lumber from 1968 until 1973 and then worked in the cafeteria for JC Harmon High School until her retirement in 1999. She also took care of all of the accounting work for her husband’s business, Johansen Trucking from 1968 to 2010. A member of South Park Church of God Holiness and Rosedale Church of God Holiness, her family and church were her priorities, always caring and serving others. She enjoyed reading Guideposts, Christian books, southern gospel music and going to ladies bible study.
Betty loved reading and writing and had over 20 pen pals at one time. She was also very talented, being able to play the clarinet, guitar and piano. Betty loved to watch the Royals play and made sure that she voted in every election that she was able to. She collected teddy bears and when she traveled, she would always bring home a new magnet from the place that she just visited. A wonderful cook and baker as well, she made the best M&M cookies!
Betty’s greatest passion was raising her family. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Johansen; father, John G. Bowen; mother and step-father, Esther and Howard Rosenberger; and siblings, Rosemary Baker, Eileen Ogg and John Bowen.
Left to remember Betty are her four children, Rhonda Johansen, Rodney (Becky) Johansen, Norman (Pat) Johansen and Earl (Susan) Johansen; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Harold Ogg and Bob (Darlene) Johansen; sister-in-law, Nellie Liberty; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., Kansas City, Kansas 66112. A gathering a family and friends will be from 6:00 until 8:00 PM, Friday April 7, 2017, also at the funeral home. Interment will be immediately following the funeral in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions are suggested to South Park Church of God Holiness.
