Barbara Ann Hawkins, 79, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away May 29, 2018 at home surrounded by family. A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00pm, Tuesday, June 5th at Chapel Hill – Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., Kansas City, KS 66112. Committal services will be held at 10:00am, Wednesday, June 6th at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 12800 Parallel Pkwy, Kansas City, KS 66109. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Barbara was born September 18, 1938 in Worthington, Minnesota to Fritz and Mabel Lidtke. She graduated from Slayton, Minnesota High School and the business school in Sioux Falls. Barbara was joined in marriage to Jim Hawkins on July 2, 1960. She worked for Northwestern Bell in Sioux Falls and Des Moines, Wisconsin Telephone in Green Bay, and Southwestern Bell and AT&T in Kansas City, where she retired as the Outside Plant Manager in Construction for the Kansas District in 1999. Wherever she worked, Barbara had to start over as a clerk but due to her determination and skill, worked her way into management at each location, regardless of how long she was there. She enjoyed going to the casino, playing Bingo, and glazing and painting pottery.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fritz and Mabel Lidtke; her sister, Phyllis Brown; and her brother, Larry Lidtke.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 57 years, Jim Hawkins, Sr.; her son, James Patrick Hawkins, Jr. and his wife Cindy – their children, James P. Hawkins, III, and Adam J. Hawkins; her step-son, Keith Edward Hawkins and his wife Kim – their children, Hilary Hawkins, and Tyler Hawkins; her sister, Carrol Pierce and her husband Doyle; her longtime caregiver and friend, Renee Perez and her husband, Luis Adrian Suarez; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
