Kimberly Berky, born Kimberly K. Miura, passed away at her home in Mililani on September 6, 2021. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, and sister as well as cherished friend to many. Kim grew up "country" in Waiahole on the island of Oahu in a close-knit local family. She graduated from Castle High School in 1994. Having worked previously as a bookkeeper she realized her life's dream of operating her own business when in 2013 Kim opened Sugar Coated Hawaii, a small bakery initially located in Mililani and then Wahiawa. Sugar Coated was known island wide for its delicious donuts, cupcakes, and other baked goods but where Kim's true talent was realized was in her design and fabrication of custom cakes. Kim had made hundreds of these cakes for weddings, birthdays, promotions, and various other events impacting these celebrations and events with class and artistry. In a world of corporate fast food and multi-national corporations Sugar Coated was a welcome oasis of a small business where folks could "talk story" and get to know both the employees and owner while purchasing delicious baked goods. Although having no formal training Kim was accomplished and gifted in her baking, a true virtuoso. Dozens of young women and a few young men will fondly remember Sugar Coated as their first job as Kim valued her role in the community as a business owner and employer. Kim had a habit of taking under her wing and employing struggling or troubled young women and through her caring mentorship and tutelage turned several of these hard luck cases into success stories. Her altruistic impact will be felt by many for years to come. Kim was an adroit gambler known to spend long hours at the tables of Las Vegas casinos while rarely losing. She enjoyed cooking, crafting, watching the Dallas Cowboys and especially spending time with her large extended family. If you were fortunate enough to know her you likely are a better human being for the experience.
Survived by her husband Andy Berky, son Bronson Berky, father Dwight Miura and stepmother Carol Miura, mother Lisa Nakasone, brothers Daniel Miura and David Okazaki, sisters Kelly Dillinger, Janice Trahan, Christie Miura, and Aimee Okazaki as well as many uncles, aunties, cousins, nephews, and nieces.
