David Edward Schmidt passed away suddenly on April 17, 2023. We are deeply shocked and saddened by his untimely passing. At 53 years old he was just beginning the second half of his life and looking forward to every second.
David was born in Creston, BC, a surprise early baby during a camping trip away from his family’s home city of Calgary. He was a curious, intelligent, happy boy and he graduated with honours in 1986. David then moved from Calgary to Lethbridge in 1992 to complete his biology degree, which lead to a series of adventures from a position as a Park Ranger in Fort MacMurray to owning his own consulting business in Port Hardy, BC, working extensively with the two First Nations bands there in many capacities. In 2019, he moved to Kamloops and found his new home with Triton Environmental Consulting.
In addition to his work, David was a skilled handyman - building his house in Coal Harbour almost entirely by himself, from clearing the land all the way through framing and finishing to landscaping. He was a talented musician, playing piano from an early age, leading to playing keyboard in a band in Calgary, sometimes performing in local bars before he was old enough to drink. More recently, David spent time appreciating the arts, teaching himself to knit and working on paint by numbers and oil painting. He was looking forward to starting his garden from seed and growing microgreens in the kitchen. David always had his fingers in many projects and crafts and had many skills he would spend his limited spare time cultivating.
David loved the outdoors in all its forms. The ocean and fishing, scuba diving, duck hunting, camping, and everything in between. He was looking forward to spending time kayaking and camping with his new girlfriend, Char.
David loved many things but his greatest pride and joy were his two children, Isabella (20) and Alexander (17); both wonderful, hardworking young adults who are moving on to university and embarking on their own adventures.
David is survived by his two children, Isabella and Alexander, parents Dennis and Ruth Schmidt, sister Susanne Schmidt, her husband Josh Prins.
At this time, there is no service planned. A memorial will be held later this summer to allow more friends and family to attend.
