He was born in Hiawatha, Kansas on February 20, 1930.
Robert graduated from Southwest High School in Kansas City, Missouri, and continued on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. After graduating, he enjoyed a successful career as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force from 1952-1954. He then married Ashby Miller Long on January 8, 1955; they were married for 68 years.
Robert worked for 37 years as an Automotive Consumer Products Executive. He enjoyed an extensive career at Union Carbide Corp. for 32 years rising through the marketing organization to become Vice President, General Manager for automotive products. In 1986, he and several other executives founded a new company, First Brands Corporation. He served as Executive Vice President and President of the automotive division. His last position prior to retirement in 1991 was to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of STP.
He achieved many goals in life including having been born the son of an Irish immigrant, and as such he was entered onto the Irish government’s list of Irish citizens who have been born abroad. His Irish citizenship was an achievement of which he was extremely proud. Robert was listed on Marquis Who’s Who as a noteworthy Consumer products company executive. He was also a member of the Motor and Equipment Manufacturers Association (Board of Directors) and the Automotive Sales Council, as well as a member of Fairfield County Hunt Club (Westport, Ct.) and Bay Colony Club (Naples, Fl.).
Robert had a great love of travel and crossed the globe extensively from Southern Africa, to Greenland and even up the Khyber Pass in Afghanistan.
Robert is survived by his wife, Ashby Long Cassidy; daughters, Claire Cassidy Foss and Patricia Cassidy Devine; grandson, Charles Sussman; great-granddaughters, Wyatt Sussman and Gray Sussman; granddaughter, Ashby Sussman; grandson, Conor Devine and granddaughter, Christine Devine Rhea.
