Michael L. Mattingly passed away on February 26, 2021, after an eight-week battle with Covid-19. He is survived by his wife Susan; daughter Kelly Mattingly Anderson and her husband Eric; daughters Ashley and Emily; grandchildren Turner, Reagan, and Campbell; sister Daisy Bittinger and husband Larry; brother Phil Mattingly and his wife Carol; brother Dwight Mattingly and his wife Sharon; and multiple nieces and nephews. He was 72 years old.
Mike was born in Leitchfield, Kentucky, in 1948. He graduated from Paris High School in Paris, Kentucky, and then enrolled as a 17-year-old freshman at Hobe Sound Bible College, which is where he met his wife Susan. But despite leaving his home state, his love for his beloved University of Kentucky Wildcats never wavered, and he followed his favorite team religiously until his final days.
He had to work his way through college, which was just the beginning of the lifetime reputation he would earn as a hard worker. Mike found work on Jupiter Island doing everything from caddying to maintenance to valet parking. He held various job positions over the years, but most notably, held a position of high esteem among members and staff alike for more than 50 years. Mike became known as the guy that could get it done, no matter the challenge.
In 1970, Mike married Susan Cone and shortly thereafter was drafted into the Army, where he served as an Assistant Chaplin at Brooks Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. When his tour was over, he and Susan moved back to Hobe Sound, Florida, and never left.
Mike returned to his work on Jupiter Island. Over the years he became known as one of the most dedicated fixtures on the island. One member described him best when he said, “Mike Mattingly knows no hours and he always has a smile on his face.”
Mike retired from his labor of love in September 2020.
