She was born in Bluefield West Virginia December 12, 1933 to the late Raymond B.Ferguson and Nita Martin Ferguson. Mary Lou spent her youth in Lynchburg Virginia. She started her education at Virginia Intermont college and transferred to the Ohio State University, where she received a bachelors in education, and was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority and a member of the 1954 homecoming court.
Mary Lou moved to Akron Ohio where she taught in the Akron public schools for more than 20 years. She started her passion with education at Schumacher elementary. Mary Lou received her Masters of education at Akron University. After that Mary Lou finished her teaching career at Essex elementary in West Akron.
In 1983 Mary Lou retired from teaching and married T.F. Minter. Mary Lou and Tom were members of Portage CC and Firestone CC for many years. Mary Lou enjoyed spending time with friends, either golfing or dining. Mary Lou and Tom moved to Jupiter, Florida in 1984 and moved in Jonathan's Landing CC. They became true snowbirds and spent half their time in Jupiter and the other half in Akron until Tom's passing in 2007. At that point Mary Lou made Jupiter her full-time home.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents and husband Tom and half brother Carl E. Lee.
Mary Lou leaves behind her son, Jay Slagle and her daughter-in-law, Isabella Slagle of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; granddaughter Ashton Slagle of Winston Salem, North Carolina; her cousin, Melissa Lee of Lewisburg, West Virginia, and countless friends from Akron, Lynchburg and Jupiter.
