James Gerald Del Mauro, former Corporate Vice President of GE Medical Systems, peacefully joined our Heavenly Father on January 13. He had fought a valiant battle against Parkinson’s Disease for nearly twenty-five years.
While Jim started his career selling earplugs door to door, he later joined General Electric in 1970 and then GE Medical Systems in 1974 as the East District Sales Manager. Over the next twenty-five years, he would go on to have a brilliant career in various leadership roles, including leading the National Sales and Service Teams. As one of CEO Jack Welch’s right-hand men, he helped launch new imaging technologies and secure monumental customer partnerships. Jim’s business success is not to be over-shadowed by his engaging, charismatic, and authentic leadership approach. He lit up a room with his quick wit, smile, and humor. He could disarm the most challenging adversaries and loved to bring people and teams together. No wonder he was often referred to as the “Mayor.”
Upon retirement in 1999, he put down roots in Rosemary Beach, FL, where he was instrumental in planning the future of the town. He was the first Chairman of the POA, successfully ensuring that Rosemary Town Hall was transferred to the homeowners. He loved to walk the streets of Rosemary, greeting everyone with a “Hi, I’m Jim. Where are you from?” If you knew Jim, you were a friend for life.
An avid runner and marathoner, he hosted the annual Jim Del Mauro Rosemary Run with proceeds donated to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Foundation.
Jim was born on June 8, 1941 in Newark, NJ. His father, Rocco Generoso Geraldo “Gerry” Del Mauro was the band leader of the Jerry DelMar Orchestra playing with legends such as Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra. His mother, Ann, worked as a beautician while raising her three children. His family lived on Clifton Avenue, across the street from the Roman Catholic Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart where he served as an altar boy. He was a graduate of St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark serving as a class officer and captain of the swim team. He often said that his tenure at St. Benedict’s changed the trajectory of his life. He was graduated from St. Bonaventure University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1964.
Jim is survived by his wife, Abby, as well as, his children, David Del Mauro, Lisa Del Mauro, Rachel Gilbreath (Keith), his stepchildren, Kellie Allen, Scott Allen, Kristine Orms (Chuck), Thaddeus Smith, Nathaniel Smith, Caleb Smith, his brother Van Del Mauro (Betty), his grandchildren, Emma Del Mauro, Rocco Del Mauro, Lucia and Bennett Gilbreath, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Gerry and Ann Insabella Del Mauro, his sister and brother-in-law, Gail and James Dale, and his wife Elizabeth Del Mauro.
Jim will always be remembered by his unfailing dedication to his family, friends, and co-workers. He was a man of strong faith and taught us all the importance of empathy, unconditional love and candor. His outsized personality will endure with all that knew him, his generosity unparalleled.
His favorite phrase was borrowed from Mark Twain, and truly epitomized how he approached and lived his life: “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”
Jim’s Celebration of Life will be held on March 3, 2023 at Town Hall in Rosemary Beach, FL at 1:00 p.m. with a reception to follow on the Rosemary Western Green. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, NJ at www.sbp.org/give.
