He was born on July 16th 1923 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania to Ethel Gehen and George Butts Sr. He joined the United States Navy in 1941 and served as a Gunnery Instructor until he was Honorably Discharged in 1946.
A graduate of Drexel University, George joined Chrysler Corporation in 1949 as a student engineer and earned a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Chrysler Institute in 1951. During his career at Chrysler, he was named Vice President of Product Planning in 1973, Vice President of Stamping and Assembly in 1977 and then Vice President of Quality and Productivity from 1980 – 1988. He was instrumental in many design innovations and was a tenacious leader for Chrysler, and after 38 years with Chrysler he retired from the automotive industry. Following his retirement, George then formed G.F. Butts & Associated offering consulting services to businesses, government, and industry where he diligently worked for another 10 years.
He was a lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Thomas More Parish, inTroy Michigan, and St. Jude Catholic Church in Jupiter Florida. He was an avid golfer and served on the board of Jupiter Hills Golf Club and was a life member at Orchard Lake County Club. George was also an active board member at the Jupiter Medical Center Foundation for over 20 years.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gerry, daughters Teresa Rubino (Ross) of Park Ridge, IL, and Nancy Gilbreath (Jimmy) of Johnston IA, Granddaughters, Lynn and Lauren Rubino, and Megan and Sara Gilbreath. A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday February 18th from 5pm to 7pm at Aycock Funeral Home in Jupiter Florida.
Funeral Mass will be on Thursday February 19th at 10am at St. Jude Catholic Church in Jupiter Florida. Burial to follow at Riverside Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Treasure Coast Hospice or to the Jupiter Medical Center Foundation.
