Edward James Barry Scott was born, March 6, 1932, in Spanish Town, Jamaica, West Indies. He was born as one of seven children to Jacob and Mary Barry Scott. His father, Jacob, died when Edward was very young. “Rex”, as he was then known by friends and family, was raised for a time by his mother with six other siblings before being raised for most of his adolescent life by his grandmother in the Jamaican parish of St. Elizabeth. Rex graduated from the equivalent to high school in Jamaica and completed degrees at a Jamaican college.
As a young adult in Kingston, Jamaica, in the late 1950’s, Ed professed his faith in Christ as Savior and Lord through the Youth for Christ Ministries. It was through YFC Ministries that he met and courted a beautiful woman, Dorothy Elaine Neil, the daughter of Percival and Violet Neil. Dorothy was an exemplary, committed follower of Jesus Christ. They married in New York in 1961 and she joined him in Freeport, Grand Bahamas. There they raised Jonathan, James, Gordon, and Alyson, and had the loving support and assistance of Lydoria “Dora” Malcolm, who became an integral part of the Scott family. Ed was a faithful, loving husband and father, and together with the nurturing presence and partnership of Dorothy, they provided a home where their children would come to know, love, and follow Christ as Lord and Savior.
While in the Bahamas, “Scottie”, as Ed became known to close friends and family at that time, distinguished himself as an extremely reliable and effective employee of the Port Authority and later with the Grand Bahama Island Promotion Board in the department of accounting and finance. He was very gifted in public speaking (preaching/teaching), which gave him opportunities to engage in itinerant preaching on the island. He partnered with others in helping to birth and plant a church in Freeport. He became a treasurer in St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Freeport and did some accounting for the affiliated school where all of his children attended while on the island.
Scottie relocated his family to Miami, Florida in 1973. While there he worked faithfully as a spiritual leader of his family and, with Dorothy, secured the health and welfare of their children. He was a full time employee in the accounting and finance department for the Miami Aircraft Services International for many years. During that time he also served as a lay spiritual leader in the Open Bible Church of Miami, FL and later, the University Baptist Church in Coral Gables, FL. He pursued and obtained his MBA from the University of Miami and both he and Dorothy became official US citizens. After all four of his children completed college and began raising their own families, Ed retired from the Aircraft Services International company. He and Dorothy along with Dora, relocated to Jupiter where he built a home. He was involved in The Alliance Church and Beacon Baptist Church before finally settling as part of the lay leadership in the Jupiter Farms Seventh Day Adventist Church. He lived in Jupiter farms until his death at 91 years of life and 4 months shy of 62 years of marriage. He was then warmly received into his eternal inheritance and the fulfillment of the promises of the Savior Jesus Christ whom Ed claimed as Lord all his life since his authentic profession of faith.
Throughout his life, Ed’s hobbies included cricket (where the Esquire Rebels Cricket Team became the 1970 Champions in Freeport), singing, playing guitar, the card game, Bridge, and Dominoes with extremely close friends (who were like family), traveling, golf, watching WWF, and the UM Hurricanes and Miami Dolphins. His fanatic intensity while coaching from the couch was always fun to watch! He had a God-given gift for horticulture, creating amazing vibrant gardens with a wide variety of fruit trees and bushes, vegetables, legumes, and flowering plants. He was successful at harvesting his own Caribbean produce which included mangos, ackee, gungu peas, sugar cane, coconut, papaya, breadfruit and sweet sop! At times he even spliced plants together to engineer new varieties of vegetation. He loved raising dogs and enjoyed good food, especially Jamaican cuisine of his native homeland. Together with the family he savored such foods as ox tail, barbequed curry goat, curry chicken, rice and peas (with coconut milk), ackee and codfish with bammy, carrot juice (made with carrots, nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar, condensed milk, salt, and rum), and homemade rum raisin ice cream (manually churned in an ice cream bucket!) He especially loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and relatives. Ed was always considered a man of character, warm, outgoing, easy to be around, humorous, affable, charming, principled, and a man with deeply held, firmly rooted biblical and Christ-centered convictions. He was also known as a man with an irresistible smile who loved to laugh and encouraged laughter in others through his constant humor. He had an unmistakable whistle(!), a warm heart, a vibrant faith, and a strong dedication to his family and his Lord.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his children, Jonathan married to Aimee, James married to Marjorie, Gordon, and Alyson Crews, married to Rick. His family has further “blossomed” with 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren! He also leaves our faithful, Dora Malcolm, regarded and cherished as family to and with all the Scotts, and his beloved dog, Duke II. Ed also leaves behind many nephews, nieces, and many close friends. He was a very blessed man and a great blessing to many.
A memorial service for Ed will be held Saturday, May 13, at 10:30am at the Aycock-Riverside Funeral and Cremation Center (1112 Military Trail, Jupiter, FL). He will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony at Riverside Memorial Park (19351 SE County Line Road, Tequesta, FL) at 1:00pm
