Minister David Lloyd Strachan was born in Kingston, Jamaica April 10th 1948. He is the last-born child of the 15 children of Samuel and Belrona Strachan. He did not refer to himself as the baby, but more commonly as the “wash belly.” He grew up on a farm in New Gardens, St. Andrew with plenty of fun-loving memorable stories. Some of his favorite memories were of cricket games in the street, shooting marbles, and going down to the nearby river to swim and play. He was raised by God-fearing parents in the Church of God of Holiness.
In his high school years, he moved back to Tower Hill, Kingston. It was there that he received a position as an electrician apprentice. He mastered his craft then, after some time, was able to work at his first job as an electrician site foreman at Lannaman’s Candy Company. Colleagues recalled that he was a hard-working man. He also wired several homes, businesses, and prominent churches in Jamaica. He met his first wife in Jamaica and had four daughters: Olivene, Amoy, Andrea, and Melissa. He migrated to the United States leaving behind his family to make a better life for them. About two years later, his family joined him in the U.S. He later married Kathleen Earle with stepson Errol (deceased). Their union produced three children: Kijon, Kdave, and Kada.
It would be unjust to diminish how often and how highly he spoke of his brother Simeon who arranged for him to live in the United States. He was forever grateful to Simeon and his wife Julia Mae. Minister Strachan was also very instrumental in bringing many other friends and family members to the United States so that they too could pursue their American dream the way he had.
In his craft as an electrician, he wired tall skyscrapers in downtown Manhattan to tiny Brooklyn apartments, sometimes at no charge to families in need. He worked long hours on weekends as an electrical subcontractor. He would even rewire his children’s TVs and electronics for longer life when he wasn’t ready to buy them new ones. He was employed at Asher Candy Company for over 25 years as an Electrician Supervisor and at Angelica Laundry Services for 10 years. It was with Angelica that he transferred locations to Atlanta, Georgia. He lived in Atlanta until his passing.
Minister Strachan preached the gospel to many from his youth. He was an active member of the Jamaica Evangelistic Center, under the leadership of Rev. V.T. Williams in Kingston, Jamaica. His ministry extended to his family at home where he would have weekly Bible study with his children. He would eventually be officially ordained in the ministry of Christ under Bishop Ezra Sterling. He was a member of the ministerial staff of Enon Baptist Church of Atlanta, Georgia under Pastor Dr. Gregory L. Pollard. He was a member of the Cancer Care, April birth month and Men’s Development Ministries. David’s favorite pastime was to travel the world by cruise or by air. Though he has traveled throughout the world, some of his most memorable vacations were in Jamaica, England, Italy, France, Dominican Republic, Canada, and the Bahamas. He is survived by his beloved wife Kathleen Strachan, who he simply referred to as “Honey”; children, Olivene, Amoy, Andrea, Melissa, Kijon, Kdave, and Kada; grandchildren, Sakenna, Malik, Christopher, Hazel, Joseph, Rebecca, Errol,Jr. and Kilante. Siblings, Pastor Samuel Strachan, Bishop Bobsy Strachan, Bishop William Strachan, Deaconess Ena Rodney, Reverend Daphne Forbes, Deacon Roy Strachan, and Victor Strachan; many loving nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
The family would like to thank the staff of Bridgeway Affinity Hospice for their kind and loving care given to our father in his last days. His immediate team Abigail, Britney, Zarena and Chaplain Lamont were phenomenal.
