As a youth, his leadership ability was spotted early. He had a voice...even as a young kid. When his neighborhood playmates would knock on the door for Little Darrien to come out and play..he may have been 7, but his neighborhood walk mates...15. Why would the older kids wanna be in the midst of a mere child? Because Darrien was wise beyond his years, an old soul as they say. He was affectionately nicknamed “ Gump”. And this kid had gumption..
Early on he possesd a love for numbers and math. He always wanted to win...and show you he had abilities. Math excited him, and when asked why he liked it so much...he’d reply, “Because you can have wrong answers”.
Darrien didn’t like anything subjective, just facts. He also sat as a boy amongst men, and understood positioning at a very young age.
Atlanta Georgia:
The move happened and he was newly placed in APS (Atlanta Public Schools). He attended King Middle School and Maynard Jackson. Here, is were he developed his friendships in the Atlanta community.
Darrien truly enjoyed his teenage years. As a joke, he placed his name on the Homecoming court list the day of elections to see if he would win. To his wit and popularity, he was named at Maynard Jackson High School Homecoming, Mr. 12th Grade!! ( His joke...I didn’t even campaign)
He graduated and decided to go to Savanah State University.
Savanah State University :
Darrien majored in Mass Communication and enjoyed the college life. A favorite pass time while in college was Tuesday night bowling. He and his peers would lock down the alleys for hours. Its also the place where he met his sweetheart Cashiah Johnson. It was his junior year and her freshman year.
Cashiah: “ When we met, he started taking to me..like he already knew me...like we were friends” ...lol
The two hit it off instantly. They shared a like-mindedness that seemed kismet. And that connection gave birth to a son.
In 2020 Darrien left college to pursue other endeavors with the promise to go back in the fall of 2022. He would have graduated in December.
Due to his untimely demise, that promise will not be fulfilled.
But the promise he made to his family and his son Legend, will be indelibly etched in our spirits...forever.
