Joel was born to Maurice and Ida. B Karp on June 27th, 1935, and was raised in Lowell, Massachusetts. He attended St. Anselm College for three years before being admitted to Tufts University School of Dental Medicine where he earned a DMD in 1959. Following Tufts he was stationed in Augsburg, Germany serving as a captain in the United States Army. Joel lived in Stow, Massachusetts for 35 years while practicing dentistry in Maynard, later retiring to Cape Cod. In 2003, Joel and his wife Carole moved to Florida, returning to enjoy Cape Cod each summer. Joel was an avid fisherman, meticulous gardener, and passionate sports fan. He greatly enjoyed playing in his senior softball leagues, both in Florida and Cape Cod. He loved playing cribbage and monopoly with his grandchildren. Joel was preceded in death by his brother, Herbert Karp.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Carole R. Karp; son, Jamie Karp and his wife Yuko Mikami, of Menlo Park, California; daughter, Amy Primak and her husband Robert , of Andover, Massachusetts; and grandchildren, Jake and Tiffany Karp and Ari, Adam, and Shoshana Primak.
A private graveside service will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts. A memorial service is planned for the spring.
