He was born January 27, 1929, in Cameron, WV to Glenn Allen Knight and Virginia Gail Crow Knight. The family soon moved to the family farm on Fork Ridge in Marshall County, West Virginia.
He started school in a one room schoolhouse at Terrell School. David was the top student in first grade as he was the only student! He graduated Chester High School in 1946. After graduating he enrolled in West Liberty State College, earning his bachelor's degree.
At age 19 David opened his first grocery store with a business partner. In 1951, David was drafted into the army during the Korean War. He spent 2 years in the army Signal Corp in Korea.
Having finished his 2-year enlistment he returned to his business, which his father ran in his absence. David eventually moved from his grocery business to selling furniture. It was at this time that he met the love of his life Rose Marie Shalvey. The couple married in February 1957 and led a blessed and contented life until her passing in 2005.
They raised 6 children: the late Mark Knight (Mario Cisneros) of Mt Ranier, MD, Christopher Knight of Jefferson, Colette Knight of Jefferson, Patrick Knight (Shelly) of Jefferson, Michael Knight (Minh) of Carnegie, and Richard Knight of Jefferson.
In 1963 he came to Jefferson (Greene County), at that time, he and his father went back into the grocery business purchasing Knight’s Market from a cousin. Daily he enjoyed the companionship and respect for his customers and especially his employees. David operated his market until his retirement in 1999. At that point he transitioned to full time farming and raising cattle. Throughout his life his hobbies and interests included gardening and the sport of night hunting with friends and their dogs.
In addition to his children David had 10 grandchildren Kelli, Amy and Jared (deceased) Knight, Abigail, Rachel, Gabriel and Brendan Agha, Preston Nguyen, Moises Cisneros and Christina Knight. He had 2 great grandchildren Cole and Kylie Knight. He was very proud of his family and the multicultural nature that it had evolved into. In addition, David has a half-brother, Timothy Knight of Cameron, WV and was proceeded in death by a brother Richard Knight of Cameron WV.
Dave was a lifelong Baptist and says that he’s had a wonderful life. He credits God, family and friends for that. He wants to say, “Thank you, you know who you are”.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in memory of Dave to Amedisys Hospice, 2183 McClellandtown Rd., Masontown, PA 15461.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Behm Funeral Home, 1477 Jefferson Road, Jefferson, PA 15344, Gregory P. Rohanna, supervisor.
