Thomas E. “Sam” Chappell 87, of Tutwiler-Beat Ten Community, passed away Monday, January 25, 2016, at Walker Baptist Medical Center. Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 27, 2016 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home in Jasper. Funeral services will be Thursday, January 28, 2016, at 10:00 AM in the Kilgore-Green Chapel. William Tittle will officiate. Burial will be at High Hill Cemetery. Sam was born and raised in Beat Ten and would not live anywhere else. He was the operator of Franklin Ferry for many years. He had many hilarious stories to tell about the days he was the ferry boat operator. After the bridge was built and completed, he started to work for Walker County District 3 on the bridge crew. He made a lot of friends there before he retired. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors. He raised the biggest and prettiest garden every year until he got sick and disabled. Anyone who ever bought his tomatoes would tell you they were the best they ever ate. Sam was a loving, caring father and grandfather. He also had many friends that he loved. He will be loved forever and greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his father, Harvey Chappell; mother Annie Brown Chappell; and all siblings, brothers Clyde Chappell, Vernon Chappell; sisters, Dorris Gant, Evelyn Tittle, Nettie Gant, and Mag Busby. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Lindsey (Charles); sons, Douglas Chappell and Donald Chappell (Donna); grandchildren, Lori Defnall (Patrick), Brandon Chappell, Joshua Chappell, Adam Chappell, Sheray Chappell, Shea Underwood; great-grandchildren Allison Christopher, Ethan Defnall, Zack Defnall, Aizlyn Lewis and Cade Richards. Also survived by special friends, Tommy and Linda Kyzer, Herbert and Lois Hall, Ronald and Doris Garner Gentvia Hospice care workers, Julia Concord and Joy Kelly.
